Part 14 of 14 in How Social Impact Startups Build on Success: A Positive Deviance Guide for Indian Founders← Part 13
This chapter explains how Indian social impact startups can find and scale solutions that communities are already using successfully. It helps founders apply Positive Deviance through data, artificial intelligence, community ownership and small, measured steps.
- Communities already contain people and practices that solve parts of difficult problems.
- Artificial intelligence can help find successful people and practices faster and at greater scale.
- Community ownership helps make positive change last.
- Founders should start small, measure results, celebrate early wins and amplify what works.
- Indian social impact startups can scale unlikely innovators who are succeeding inside the problem.
India’s social impact startups have a historic opportunity. We have digital infrastructure, large government systems that generate data, a young and energetic founder community, and — most importantly — communities that have already solved parts of the problems we are trying to address.
Positive Deviance teaches humility and respect. The solutions are not only in our pitch decks, product roadmaps or expert workshops. They are in the practices of the mother who feeds her child differently, the teacher who gets results without extra resources, the farmer who maintains soil health under the same rainfall, the SHG leader who manages defaults better, the ASHA who earns trust, and the cooperative that returns most of the value to its members.
Artificial intelligence gives us the tools to find these people and practices faster and at greater scale than was possible when the Sternins began their work in Vietnam. Community ownership gives us the path to make the change stick. The combination — data and AI for discovery, community practice for ownership — is available to Indian founders today.
Start small. Pick one problem that matters to the community you serve. Find your positive deviants. Let the community practise the uncommon behaviours that already work. Measure the results. Celebrate the early wins. Amplify. Then repeat.
The world’s toughest problems will not be solved only by importing expertise or by designing ever-smarter products from the outside. They will be solved by recognising and scaling the unlikely innovators who are already succeeding inside the problem. That is the work of the next generation of Indian social impact startups.
