Part 7 of 15 in How to Find a Job: Stop queuing on portals. Show an employer the value you can add.← Part 6Part 8 →
This chapter explores where jobs in India are actually filled, focusing on the hidden job market. It helps job seekers understand unconventional ways to find employment beyond traditional job postings.
- Visible job market includes placement brochures and portals, but they are a minority.
- Hidden job market includes resignations, new projects, and unadvertised needs.
- Four doors to jobs: advertisement, campus, referral, and direct proposal.
- MSMEs, professional firms, family businesses, and startups often hire through the hidden market.
- Divya's story shows success through personal initiative and understanding the hidden market.
The visible market is the placement brochure, the portal, and the government notification. It is real, and it is the minority of how people in ordinary companies start work. The hidden market is a resignation, a new machine, a delayed order, a founder who has had enough of doing the books at midnight, a shop that has opened a second counter. Nobody has written a job description. Somebody still has a problem. Bolles built his method on this fact. In India the fact is sharper, because most employment is not in firms that have an HR department.
Four doors, and which one you have been knocking
Door one is the advertisement. You already know it. Use it as a research tool, not as your only road. A posting tells you a company is alive and that a kind of work exists. It does not mean the chair is empty for you.
Door two is the campus. It is a gift if your college is on the circuit, and a rumour if it is not. Unstop’s 2026 sample found students on campuses visited by many companies far more likely to be placed than students on campuses almost no company visits. That is a structural fact. Treating it as a personal failure wastes months. If your campus is thin, your search starts off campus on day one, not after the last company has left.
Door three is the referral. In India this door is overloaded with obligation and underloaded with information. A referral works when the person inside can say a true sentence about your proof. It fails when it is only a surname. Do not lead with the surname. Lead with the sentence, and let the surname open the meeting.
Door four is the direct proposal. You identify twenty organisations that have a problem your Lotus can touch. You learn enough to be specific. You send proof to a named person. You ask for a short conversation, not for a vacancy. This is the door the rest of the book trains. It is slower in week one and faster in week six, because you are no longer interchangeable.
Where the hidden market sits
Look past the companies your batch has heard of. The likely buyers of a graduate who can show proof are often unglamorous.
- MSMEs with ten to two hundred people, in industrial estates, markets and mill areas. They hire when the work hurts, not when a campus season opens.
- Professional firms: CA and CS offices, architecture studios, diagnostic labs, export houses, design shops, small law offices. The partner is the hiring manager.
- Family businesses in a growth spurt: a second branch, a new compliance burden, a child who has gone abroad and left a gap.
- Startups after the first ten customers, when the founder can no longer be the implementation team. They rarely have a clean fresher requisition. They have a fire.
- Replacements. Someone is getting married, moving, or failing probation. The role will be posted late, or never, if a credible person appears in time.
- Contract and project work that becomes a seat. A six-week documentation job, done well, is a common Indian back door into a permanent role.
Divya and the CRO
Divya finished B.Pharm in Vijayawada and assumed the door was a hospital pharmacy. The hospital doors were crowded, and several wanted experience she could not get without the job. A cousin in Hyderabad worked in administration at a clinical research organisation, not in science. Divya did not ask for a referral. She asked for the names of two people who supervised trial assistants, and for permission to write to them in her own words. She read a publicly reported trial summary until she could explain the visit schedule without showing off. She wrote a three-page plain-language brief and put it on a simple page with her name.
The first supervisor did not reply. The second forwarded the page to a colleague whose assistant had resigned. The interview was twenty minutes and mostly a check that she had written the brief herself. She was hired as a clinical trial assistant on a stipend that was not glamorous and was real. The portal never knew the role existed. The cousin’s value was a name and a norm, not a favour that skipped judgment.
How to see a hidden role
Read local signals. A new board on a factory gate. A CA firm advertising in a city WhatsApp group for articles, which often means the office is drowning. A D2C brand whose Instagram replies are slow and wrong, which often means they need a person, not a tool. A clinic that has started a second shift. A college that has launched an evening batch and has no one to talk to parents. These are not romantic. They are vacancies in embryo.
Keep a list of twenty. Not two hundred. Twenty is enough to go deep, and small enough that you will feel the shame of not having researched them. Depth is the advantage. Your competitor has sent five hundred resumes and remembers none of the companies.
