
I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of artificial intelligence in education lately. Just last week, I had a conversation with a young entrepreneur who pitched me an AI-based educational platform that promised to “revolutionize” learning with personalized curriculums and real-time feedback. It was an impressive pitch, full of tech jargon and dazzling possibilities. But as engaging as it was, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of déjà vu. I’ve seen similar pitches before, each claiming to be a panacea for our educational woes. And yet, here we are, still grappling with the same fundamental issues.
AI in education is like a shiny new gadget that everyone wants to have, but few know how to use effectively. Don’t get me wrong—I’m not dismissing the potential of AI. It’s undeniably a powerful tool, capable of transforming how we teach and learn. But it’s not a magic bullet. It’s not going to fix our education system by itself. In fact, if not implemented thoughtfully, it could very well exacerbate existing problems.
Consider India’s education system, which I often write about with a critical eye. We’ve long struggled with issues of inequality, rote learning, and lack of critical thinking skills. AI can certainly help address some of these issues. For example, adaptive learning technologies can tailor educational experiences to individual students’ needs, providing real-time feedback and personalized challenges. But without a deliberate framework, these technologies could also widen the gap between those who have access to these tools and those who don’t. And let’s not forget that AI’s recommendations are only as good as the data it’s fed, which often reflects existing biases and inequalities.
I’ve often said that Indian education needs a radical rethink, and AI is a part of that rethink, but it can’t be the whole solution. We need to be asking the right questions first: What are our educational goals? How do we define success for our students? And how can AI help us achieve these goals without compromising our values?
In my medical practice, I’ve learned that technology is most effective when it complements human judgment rather than replaces it. The same is true for education. Teachers are irreplaceable. They bring empathy, intuition, and a deep understanding of their students’ needs—qualities that algorithms simply can’t replicate. AI should be a tool that empowers teachers, enabling them to focus on what they do best: inspire, mentor, and guide.
There’s also the question of data privacy. In our rush to integrate AI into classrooms, we must not overlook the ethical implications. How is student data being collected, used, and protected? Transparency and accountability must be prioritized to ensure that AI serves the best interests of students and educators alike.
Moreover, AI in education requires supportive policies and infrastructure. Schools need robust digital platforms, and educators need training to effectively incorporate AI tools into their teaching methods. Without these foundational elements, AI’s potential will remain untapped, and we’ll be left with little more than an expensive experiment.
Some might argue that I’m being too cautious, that I’m underestimating AI’s transformative power. But as an angel investor, I’ve learned to be wary of overhyped promises. A founder I backed once told me that embracing uncertainty is key, a lesson I’ve also applied to my IVF practice. In both fields, progress comes from iterative improvements, not quick fixes. It’s about learning from mistakes and being open to change, but not at the expense of our core principles.
In the end, the role of AI in education is not to replace human interaction but to enhance it. It’s not about teaching machines to think like humans, but about using machines to help humans think better. We need to approach AI with a balanced perspective, recognizing both its potential and its limitations. Only then can we harness its true power to create an educational system that’s equitable, effective, and inspiring.
AI is a tool—a powerful one, yes—but in the hands of skilled educators and informed policymakers, it can be much more than that. It’s a means to an end, not an end in itself. And as we integrate AI into our educational frameworks, let’s not forget that the ultimate goal is to prepare students to navigate a complex world, equipped not just with knowledge, but with the wisdom to use it wisely.
