What to do if your IVF doctor does not answer your questions ?

I was doing a consultation with a patient who had failed an IVF cycle in another clinic .

While reviewing the records, I was asking basic questions such as – How many follicles did the doctor see on the ultrasound scan ? How many eggs did they collect ? How many embryos did they transfer ?

Her face looked completely blank , and when I asked her why she didn’t have this basic information , she said – My doctor never told me anything during my IVF treatment, other than a generic – Everything is going well.

When I asked her why she didn’t ask her doctor these questions , she said – I used to, but my doctor refused to answer them. Every time I asked, he would make fun of me by saying – Looks like you have been consulting Dr Google again !

Many doctors get upset when patients ask them questions. They feel that patients should leave everything upto them – after they are expert professionals, and they don’t want their authority questioned,

They feel the patient is challenging them by asking questions , because this suggests the patient doubts their competence and skills,

They treat a question as a sign that the patient doesn’t respect them or trust them , and they often lose their temper when this happens, and start abusing the poor patient. Which is why they need to find additional sources of information but if you ever have a doctor who makes fun of you because you are asking questions or refuses to answer your question this is a Red flag because this is the Hallmark of a bad doctor doctors know that we are not mind readers and we need to factor in the patient preferences when making decisions and that’s why it’s so important that doctors learn to treat patients with respect and open and transparent rather than to that questions or refuse to answer them or make fun of them for using the internet to find the answers and what upsets me is white patients are so scared to speak up and white patients allow themselves to get intermediate it by Doctors is not as if the doctor is doing your favour by treating you and part of his job description is to share information with you and to educate you and if he doesn’t do that then obviously he’s not doing a job well I will need to go find a better doctor sleep and get your treatment done well.
