Why Some IVF Patients End Up Being Used as Guinea Pigs ?

I provide second opinions for many IVF patients who have failed cycles at other clinics. When I review their medical records, I am often amazed by the number of additional add-on tests and treatments they have been given. These tests can range from sperm DNA fragmentation tests to chromosome testing for the couple to ERA testing and PGT, and PRP for “ovarian rejuvenation”.

It is well known that many of these tests are not clinically useful and do not provide any actionable information that can improve pregnancy rates. While they may generate more income for the doctor, they do not help patients get pregnant. Also, many of these treatments are experimental and unproven.

Despite this, many IVF doctors continue to order these useless and unnecessary tests, and patients often agree to them without question. Some patients may feel that the more tests the doctor orders, the better the doctor is because they are “leaving no stone unturned.” However, this is not always the case.

Clinical research has shown that many of these add-on tests and treatments do not increase success rates. In fact, some, such as LIT ( lymphocyte immune therapy ) may even be harmful ! I am concerned that IVF patients are being used as guinea pigs for these unnecessary tests. While these tests may be acceptable in a clinical research setting where scientists are trying to determine their effectiveness, it is not right for patients to pay for them out of pocket when they have not been proven to be beneficial.

There are a few reasons why this may be happening:

Patients may not be sophisticated enough to push back. They may not be assertive or may not be comfortable questioning their doctor.

Patients may not be able to do their own homework. They may not have the time or resources to research these tests and treatments.

Doctors can be paternalistic and refuse to answer patients’ questions. Some doctors may believe that they know what is best for their patients and that patients do not have the right to question their decisions.

This is why patients often end up wasting a lot of money on unnecessary tests and treatments at IVF clinics. It is important for patients to educate themselves about these tests and treatments so that they can make informed decisions about their care.

Here are some tips for avoiding unnecessary tests and treatments:

Do your research. Read about the tests and treatments your doctor is recommending to make sure they are clinically proven to be effective.

Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask your doctor about the benefits and risks of each test or treatment.

Get a second opinion. If you are not comfortable with your doctor’s recommendations, get a second opinion from another qualified IVF specialist.

Remember, you are the consumer of medical care, and you have the right to make informed decisions about your treatment.
