Why Batching IVF cycles is bad for IVF patients?

Many clinics will batch IVF patients together and treat them in a group.

This is obviously great for the clinic , because they can then do a number of IVF cycles within a short period of time .

This is commonly seen in satellite IVF clinics, or IVF clinics which depend on travelling embryologists and itinerant IVF specialists, because they don’t have the full-time expertise required to be able to IVF round the year.

The only reason they do IVF is to earn more money , which is why they group all patients together , and cycle them together for their convenience.

This is usually done by treating them with birth control pills in the cycle before the IVF cycle is due to start , so that all the patients get their period at approximately the same time .

Now while this is much more profitable for the IVF clinic , as well as the traveling embryologist and the busy IVF specialist who moves from one city to another, it’s obviously not great for the patient .

While 80% of patients will do reasonably well , the difficult patients – the ones with poor ovarian reserve or Polycystic ovarian disease ( PCOD) do badly, because these patients need customised treatment protocols .

When these clinics batch patients, it is not possible for them to customise anything , which means all patients are forced to follow the same standard protocol. This is why the risk of OHSS, as well as the risk of cycle cancellation, is so much higher in these clinics.

The tragedy is patients are so ignorant , they don’t even know that they’ve received poor quality treatment . When they fail to get pregnant , the doctor blames their “poor quality eggs” , when the truth is that the reason for the failure is a poor quality treatment protocol.

Ideally, the protocol should be customized according to the patient’s needs – it’s not possible to use a uniform one-size-fits-all for every patient.

However, this practice continues, even though it’s not in the patient’s best interests, because it’s much more convenient for the IVF clinic,

This is why it’s so important that you become an expert on your IVF treatment protocol, so that you don’t end up getting poor quality medical care.
