This is only true in those clinics which transfer multiple embryos . This is an outdated practice, followed by clinics who have a low pregnancy rate. They try to boost this by transferring many embryos at one time, with the hope that at least one will stick. The disadvantage is that if more than one stick, patients end up with a twin pregnancy. These are non-identical twins.
The complication rate in a twin pregnancy is higher than it is for a singleton, which is why this is not advised anymore.
The bigger worry is when patients end up with high-order multiple pregnancies, such as triplets and quadruplets. These have a much higher complication rate, and a lot of the babies are born premature.
The best clinics today transfer only a single embryo at a time. This is called a SET – single embryo transfer. These are clinics which do only blastocyst transfers, and are confident about their success rates. They have a good lab, and a high embryo implantation rate. They freeze the spare embryos, so that the cumulative pregnancy rate remains very high.
If your doctor tells you to transfer more than 2 embryos, this is the sign of a bad doctor. While you may be tempted by the prospect of having an instant family at one shot, in the long term this can cause considerable problems !
