When I review the treatment notes for patients who have failed IVF cycles in other clinics and who ask me for a second opinion, I get very upset about the fact that the doctor has not bothered to share photographs of the embryos with the patient .
Now I can understand why bad doctors don’t do this . They want to hide their incompetence, because they have a poor quality IVF lab which creates poor quality embryos, which is why the IVF cycles they do fail. They don’t share the photographs of these poor quality embryos with their patients because they know that patients will understand that the reason for the failure was because of the poor quality care they received, which is why it’s in their best interests to hide the truth.
They tell all their patients that they have a “Grade A” embryo ( a meaningless non-scientific term which means nothing). Because Indian patients are so gullible and trusting , it’s very easy to take them for a ride , and doctors take advantage of their ignorance.
The problem is that Indian patients are not willing to do their homework and speak up. They don’t demand that the doctor provide them with embryo photos – even though the importance of this vital piece of information is very easily available online today !
I get very worried when well-educated patients – many of who are programmers , engineers and doctors – don’t ask the doctor for their medical records, even though their should know this is their legal right.
I think this is a hangover of the Indian education system, where students are so used to being spoon-fed, that they don’t try to learn anything for themselves !
The problem is that after they have failed a cycle and learnt the importance of demanding embryo photos, they feel cheated, because they can’t understand why their doctor hid this vital information from them. Now, when they realize the importance of finding a better doctor who provides embryo photos routinely and proactively to all their patients, the harm to their trust in the medical profession has already been done, and the new doctor has to work twice as hard to regain the trust before they screw up their courage to start a new IVF cycle.
