Part 12 of 24 in School Is Not Education← Part 11Part 13 →
This chapter discusses how AI can enhance learning by acting as a companion rather than just providing answers. It highlights the role of AI in personalizing education for individual students.
Quick Summary
-
AI should multiply opportunities for thinking, not automate tasks.
-
AI can provide personalized learning experiences, adapting to individual needs.
-
Eklavya.io offers free AI learning support for various Indian educational boards.
-
Effective AI asks questions and encourages problem-solving, rather than just providing answers.
-
AI can offer low-cost, personalized learning, bridging language and economic barriers.
The best use of AI in education is not to automate the child’s work. It is to multiply the child’s opportunities to think.
A teacher with forty students faces a mathematical impossibility. Forty children can have forty misconceptions, forty paces, forty histories and forty moments of confusion. Even the best teacher cannot hold forty simultaneous private conversations.
AI changes this constraint.
A learning companion such as Eklavya.io can be available when the learner is ready. It can explain the same idea in simpler language, use an example from cricket or cooking, switch languages, ask a diagnostic question, generate additional practice, or move backward to a missing prerequisite. Eklavya currently offers free learning support across CBSE/NCERT, JEE, NEET and a growing set of state boards, with Indian-language support and private study-room features. [10]
The important word is companion, not answer machine.
Imagine a child who types, “I don’t understand photosynthesis.” A weak AI experience produces a polished paragraph. A better one asks, “What do you already know about what plants need to grow?” It uses the answer to locate the gap. It might draw an analogy, then ask the learner to predict what would happen if light were removed. It checks understanding before moving on.
The same principle applies to mathematics. Do not give the final answer first. Ask for the first step. Offer a hint. Ask the child to explain why a rule applies. Generate a similar problem after success. Return to the concept after a delay.
This matters because the friction of thinking is not a bug. It is where learning happens.
AI also changes the economics of personal attention. Human one-to-one tutoring is powerful but expensive. An AI system can offer personalised interaction at very low marginal cost. It cannot reproduce a wise human tutor, but it can make forms of practice and feedback available to millions of learners who will never have a private tutor.
For Indian families, language may be just as important as cost. A child can understand a concept in the language most comfortable for thinking, while gradually building academic vocabulary in English. Translation is no longer a separate hurdle that must be crossed before understanding can begin.
There is another advantage: psychological safety. Children often hide confusion because they fear looking stupid. A patient machine creates a low-stakes place to say, “Explain it again.” Eklavya’s own design language explicitly invites this behaviour: start where you are; ask again; go back if you need to. [10]
But the tool must preserve agency. The child should decide goals, attempt questions and evaluate explanations. The AI should help create a ladder, not carry the learner to the roof.
Parents can test any AI tutor with five questions:
Does it ask before telling? Does it adapt to mistakes? Does it encourage retrieval and practice? Does it admit uncertainty and point back to authoritative sources? Does it leave the child more capable of solving the next problem alone?
If the answer is yes, the AI is functioning like a learning companion.
If the child merely copies its output, you have purchased a very sophisticated form of cheating.
Parent reflection
• Does your AI tool ask the learner to think before it answers?
• Can the child solve the next problem without the AI?
Frequently asked questions
What is the role of AI in education according to this chapter?
AI should enhance learning by providing personalized experiences and encouraging critical thinking, rather than simply automating tasks.
How does Eklavya.io support learning?
Eklavya.io offers free learning support across various Indian educational boards, providing personalized assistance in multiple languages.
What makes an AI learning companion effective?
An effective AI learning companion asks questions, adapts to mistakes, encourages practice, admits uncertainty, and helps the learner become more independent.
Why is psychological safety important in AI learning tools?
Psychological safety allows children to express confusion without fear, creating a low-stakes environment for learning and asking for explanations.
