Why you should not allow your doctor to transfer more than one embryo at a time ?

All IVF patients want to get pregnant as quickly as possible , and they know that if they transfer more embryos at one time, the chances of one of those implanting are obviously increased , as compared to just transferring a single embryo . In fact, this is why many doctors pressurise  their patients to transfer 2 or 3 or even 4 embryos at a time, to maximize their chances of getting pregnant quickly. Patients think of twins as a bonus , because it’s like an instant family , and they can finish childbearing in one shot . They think it’s a great bargain – pay for one baby and get the second one free !

This is misleading , because it’s shortsighted to measure pregnancy rates; we should be measuring live birth rates. The risk of complications during pregnancy increases dramatically with a multiple pregnancy, even if it’s twins. Many of these babies end up being delivered prematurely, as a result of which they spend a lot of time in the NICU, and suffer from lifelong handicaps as a result of this .

Also, if you allow the doctor to transform more than one embryo, he will not be able to freeze and store the spare embryos for you . This means that if you don’t get pregnant , you will not have any spare embryos left, and will be forced to start another fresh treatment cycle . This may be great for the doctor, because he can charge you all over again , but a frozen transfer is not only much less expensive , it’s also much easier for you , and the pregnancy rate with this is even better than with a fresh cycle, because the endometrium is more receptive !
