Many patients who live in Mumbai suburbs such as Malad and Mulund are worried about whether they will be able to come to Colaba for their IVF treatment because Colaba is the southern tip of Mumbai and travelling in Mumbai is not always easy thanks to the traffic. After all, even if you do decide to get treatment at a local clinic, it’s quite possible that the local doctor is travelling from clinic A to clinic B to clinic C, and he’s the one who’s stuck in traffic, which means for all practical purposes you end up wasting half a day waiting to see the doctor! This never happens in our clinic because we are so well organised. We see patients by appointment only and honour our appointments because we’re a boutique IVF clinic and we don’t do anything else other than IVF. Patients know that when they come to us, they will find us here. Also, unlike other gynaecologists who do IVF on the side, we don’t do anything other than IVF, which means you don’t have to wait because “the doctor is doing a caesarean section”! As a result of this single-minded focus, our time management is much more efficient, which is why coming to Colaba for treatment irrespective of where they actually stay in Mumbai is really not a problem. It’s not just a question of commute or travel; it’s also a question of the quality of care they get, and we pride ourselves on our transparency in our openness and being able to explain to patients what we’re going to do for them and what is happening to them during an IVF cycle because lots of local clinics in Mumbai are extremely opaque; they don’t share any information with the patient. The patient has no idea what the name of the doctor is, who’s going to do the pickup, and who’s going to do the transfer. The doctor doing the scan changes every day there is no continuity there is no consistency they get information which changes from day to day they don’t know what the plan is they don’t know why the treatment is being changed they don’t even know whether the treatment is going well or not because the doctor doesn’t tell them anything and the ultrasound scanner is a completely different person from the clinician who’s a completely different person from the doctor who’s writing the prescription as a result of which the patient is completely lost. While these large clinics may look very impressive , a big problem is these are assembly line clinics which are very impersonal and the quality of care suffers because the patient doesn’t have any one single point of contact . On the other hand, in our clinic, they know that all they need to do is talk to me and they can do this by whatsapp and by email and they know that they will always get a reply within 24 hours . Because we’ve shared their treatment plan with them in advance , they know what’s going to happen , so that they’re in control of their cycle and this helps to reduce anxiety and stress levels considerably , which makes their journey much easier – and our treatment much smoother as well . The treatment takes only about 10-12 days, and they need to come to the clinic only 4-5 times !
Much more importantly , they have peace of mind that they’ve received high-quality IVF treatment because they will often take treatment at local clinics which are run by gynecologists who don’t have the necessary experience or expertise, because they are busy doing other things like hysterectomies or obstetrics or caesarean sections , as a result of which the quality of IVF care suffers . But sadly patients don’t realize this. Their care is fragmented , either between different doctors in the same clinic or different specialists in different clinics ! Sometimes a sonographer is in one place , the embryologist is in the second place , and the clinician is in the third place which means it’s the poor patient who gets completely lost , being bounced from one doctor to another and doesn’t have any idea about what’s happening or why ! This is especially true when the cycle fails , because then everyone clams up , and pass the buck to the other doctor ! They refuse to share information , so the patient doesn’t have any images of their ultrasound scans , or eggs , or embryos , so that they don’t even know why the cycle failed , and don’t know what they need to do differently the next time . Unfortunately , patients only learn the truth the hard way ! In their anxiety to reduce their commute time and find a local doctor as compared to going to a good doctor in Colaba , they end up not only wasting a lot of time and money they also end up reducing their chances of getting pregnant, which is an expensive mistake !
