One of the commonest questions patients ask me is:
“Doctor, we can’t travel to Mumbai for IVF treatment. Can you recommend a good doctor in our hometown?”
I wish I could.
Unfortunately, I can’t.
The simple reason is that I don’t personally know every IVF specialist in India—or around the world.
Even if I have heard of a doctor, I cannot honestly guarantee their competence, ethics, or quality of care.
Recommending another doctor is a huge responsibility, and I don’t believe it is fair to recommend someone unless I know their work first-hand.
Instead, I teach patients how to find a good doctor for themselves.
After all, this is a skill that will help you throughout your life.
Step One: Ask Two Simple Questions
Before you even book an appointment, contact the clinic by phone or email and ask these two questions:
1. Do you routinely culture embryos to the blastocyst stage (Day 5) for all suitable patients?
2. Do you routinely provide photographs of the embryos to every patient?
These are simple questions.
Every IVF clinic should be able to answer them immediately.
If the receptionist avoids answering, gives vague replies, or says that only the doctor can answer, consider that a warning sign.
Transparency should never be difficult.
A clinic that is proud of its laboratory has no reason to hide its practices.
Why These Questions Matter ?
Growing embryos to the blastocyst stage demonstrates confidence in the quality of the IVF laboratory.
Providing embryo photographs demonstrates transparency.
Good clinics understand that embryos belong to the patients.
Patients deserve to see them.
Embryo photographs also become valuable medical records that help patients understand what happened during their treatment and assist future doctors if a second opinion is needed.
Clinics that routinely provide this documentation generally have nothing to hide.
Step Two: Meet the Doctor
If the answers to both questions are “Yes,” then make an appointment.
Now comes the most important part.
You’re no longer evaluating the clinic.
You’re evaluating the doctor.
Ask Yourself These Questions
Does the doctor listen carefully?
Does the doctor encourage questions?
Does the doctor explain things clearly?
Do you feel rushed?
Or does the doctor appear more interested in seeing as many patients as possible than in understanding your individual situation?
The consultation should never feel like a factory assembly line.
Good doctors educate.
They don’t intimidate.
Trust Is Earned, Not Assumed
One of the most important ingredients of successful IVF treatment is trust.
But trust should never be blind.
The doctor needs to earn your confidence through honesty, competence, and transparency.
At the same time, you need to invest the effort required to determine whether that trust is justified.
Trust is a two-way street.
The doctor must be worthy of your confidence.
And you must be willing to participate actively in your own care.
Don’t Be Afraid to Walk Away
If something doesn’t feel right, don’t ignore your instincts.
If the doctor dismisses your questions…
If the staff seem disorganized…
If the clinic refuses to provide information…
If you feel like just another number…
Keep looking.
IVF is too important—and too expensive—to settle for a clinic that does not inspire confidence.
Choosing the Right Doctor Is the Most Important Decision You’ll Make
Patients often spend weeks comparing IVF packages, medications, and laboratory tests.
In reality, none of these decisions is as important as choosing the right doctor.
A skilled, ethical doctor working in an excellent laboratory can make an enormous difference to your chances of success.
More importantly, they can make your IVF journey far less stressful.
The Bottom Line
I may not be able to recommend a doctor in your city.
But I can teach you how to identify one.
Ask about blastocyst culture.
Ask for embryo photographs.
Meet the doctor.
Ask questions.
Evaluate both competence and character.
And most importantly, choose someone who treats you with respect, communicates honestly, and earns your trust.
Finding the right IVF doctor requires time and effort.
But it is probably the single most important decision you will make on your journey towards parenthood.
Choose wisely.
