Please Ask Me Questions—I Love Answering Them

One of the commonest complaints patients have about doctors is:

“My doctor never answers my questions.”

Sadly, this is true far too often.

Many doctors are rushed.

Some feel that questioning challenges their authority.

Others simply don’t have the time.

I take exactly the opposite approach.

If you have questions, I want you to ask them.

In fact, I enjoy answering them.

Your Questions Make Me a Better Doctor

Patients sometimes worry that they are asking “silly” questions.

There are no silly questions.

Every question teaches me something.

When I explain a complex medical concept to a patient, I have to remove the jargon and simplify it without losing the science.

That isn’t always easy.

But it makes me a better doctor and a better teacher.

If I cannot explain something clearly, perhaps I don’t understand it as well as I should.

Albert Einstein is often credited with saying:

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.”

Whether or not he actually said it, the principle is absolutely true.

Questions Help Me Understand You

Doctors are not mind readers.

I can interpret blood tests.

I can analyze ultrasound scans.

I can examine patients.

But I cannot know what is worrying you unless you tell me.

One patient may be anxious about injections.

Another may worry about embryo quality.

Someone else may be frightened that IVF will fail.

Until you ask, I don’t know what is keeping you awake at night.

When you share your concerns, I can address them.

Sometimes a two-minute conversation removes weeks of unnecessary anxiety.

Reassurance Is Also Treatment

Many patients think that treatment consists only of medicines and procedures.

I disagree.

Reassurance is also treatment.

Understanding what is happening reduces fear.

Knowing what to expect reduces stress.

When patients understand their treatment, they become active participants rather than passive spectators.

An informed patient is almost always a happier patient.

Your Questions Help Thousands of Other Patients

One unexpected benefit of patient questions is that they generate ideas for new educational content.

If one patient asks a question, it is highly likely that hundreds of others have exactly the same doubt.

By answering those questions through articles, videos, podcasts, and FAQs on my website, I can help patients whom I may never meet personally.

One thoughtful question from a single patient can end up educating thousands of people around the world.

Patients are some of my best teachers.

The Original Meaning of “Doctor”

Many people don’t realize that the word doctor comes from the Latin word docere, which means “to teach.”

Teaching is not an optional extra.

It is at the very heart of good medical practice.

Unfortunately, modern healthcare often forgets this.

Doctors become so busy treating diseases that they stop educating patients.

I believe both are equally important.

Information Therapy Has No Side Effects

One of my favourite prescriptions is Information Therapy.

Unlike medicines, it has no adverse effects.

It doesn’t require a prescription.

It costs nothing.

Yet it often reduces anxiety, improves decision-making, strengthens trust, and helps patients get better outcomes.

An informed patient makes better choices.

And better choices lead to better care.

So Please Keep Asking

If you don’t understand something, ask.

If you’re worried, ask.

If you’ve read something confusing on the internet, ask.

If another doctor has told you something that doesn’t make sense, ask.

Your questions are never an inconvenience.

They are an essential part of your treatment.

The best doctor-patient relationship is not built on blind trust.

It is built on open communication, mutual respect, and honest conversations.

So the next time we meet, don’t hesitate.

Ask me every question that’s on your mind.

Because helping you understand your treatment is just as important as providing it.

And Information Therapy remains one of the most powerful—and safest—treatments I can prescribe.
