Why do doctors blame patients when the IVF cycle fails ?

Every patient does an IVF cycle with the hope that it’s going to be their first and their last . They know that it is the one treatment which maximises their chances of getting pregnant , and because it is expensive and can be quite stressful , they hope that they are going to be amongst the lucky ones who succeed in their first attempt. Quite frankly , if every patient didn’t think they were going to get pregnant , they would never ever start an IVF cycle in the first place .

This is why when the cycle fails , they often go to pieces , and it’s very hard for them to bounce back. An honest doctor would prepare them for failure in advance, by explaining that the success rate is not 100%, and that the commonest reason why even medically perfect IVF cycles fail is because embryos don’t implant because embryos have genetic problems which we cannot either prevent or diagnose or treat . This is one of the limitations of IVF treatment today , but unfortunately , doctors are not often willing to share the truth with their patients. This is partly because they often over promise success to their patients, and many IVF clinic websites claim that their success rates are 80% per cycle ! At the time of embryo transfer , doctors are very positive and hopeful, and many will tell the patient – I’m sure you’re going to get pregnant because your embryos are beautiful and your endometrium lining is perfect. Now, when the cycle fails , the poor doctor needs to provide an explanation, and rather than being honest , he tries to evade the issue , and the easiest way of doing this is by blaming the patient for the failure .

This is surprisingly easy to do , because IVF patients are often extremely poorly informed . They are so used to letting doctors make the decisions for them , that they don’t bother to educate themselves about the technical minutiae of IVF treatment. They already suffer from low self esteem and have an inferiority complex because of their infertility , so that when the cycle fails , they invariably blame themselves on their own in any case . When the doctor reinforces this by claiming that the cycle failed because you didn’t rest properly ; or because your diet wasn’t right; or because your eggs weren’t good; or because the sperm were bad ( doctors can be very creative when coming up with explanations for the failure !)

The doctor will then order more tests , and some of these test results are bound to come back as abnormal . He will then triumphantly point out that this abnormality was the reason why the cycle failed ( while the patient if left wondering why the doctor didn’t order the test before doing the cycle, and thus prevented the failure).

However, these reasons are completely false , but doctors get away with them because patients don’t know any better , and are forced to believe what the doctor tells them . This makes a bad situation even worse , once they find out that the doctor was actually lying to them , and that the real reason for the failure was poor embryo quality because of a bad IVF lab !

They lose all confidence in any other IVF doctor , as a result of which they drop out of treatment , and reduce their own chances of ever having a baby !
