While we openly sing the praises of entrepreneurs, why don’t we also admire the employees who are willing to work for startups?
They slog equally hard, and often don’t even get their salaries on time!
They take on disproportionate amounts of risk, as compared to the rewards they get ,
Very well put. Employee in start ups work harder than any of the well paid employees of established concerns, but are rarely recognised.
They finally have a voice in you ! They are the ones that make the startup what it is during the formative years.
Yes Sir. Employees are also taking same risk as that of entrepreneurs.
Employees are the biggest assets of the startup ecosystem dr. And I think they are as courageous as the entrepreneurs to have made a decision to come out of their comfort zone to create something big or to turn a vision to reality .. that’s why it’s always “ Sum is greater than the parts “ It’s team work all around in a startup ..
Employees of startup’s who work and slog to deliver the vision to make it a success story deserve respect and proportionate rewards too
Dr Aniruddha Malpani For the same reason why we sing praises of the Leader but not of the soldiers who were convinced and motivated and to give their lives for the war they didn’t even started.
Aman Zaidi I agree.
Leader and follower both are important to play their role in the ecosystem. Without followers, there is no leader and what follower would do without a leader? So, each one an equal in the startup or in any other ecosystem.
I don’t think this is the case Doc. At the end of the day, a successful startup is never a lone man effort. Implying, the credit for any entrepreneurs’ success goes to the entire team which he represents. Without a team who has withered all the hardships & dark moments of a startup together, there can hardly be a successful “company”. 🙂
I really do appreciate you initiating an open conversation on it though.
But there is a difference Doctor, one has an eject button to their disposition. Others fly despite, not holding one. ?
Experienced people working for startups dont come at low price too. They demand their cut without the risk taken by the entrepreneur and the financier….
Experience gained by them is rich too…
Bhanu Silpa Mukkavilli , thank you!
Employees play an important role for entrepreneurial success. They are motivated by the new ideas with large amount of risk. They stay with every difficult situation. They work hard to transform a concept into reality.
Sir No Entrepreneur on earth can hoist his / her flag without a team. Its impossible.
Well said Sir! These are the silent workers who remain in the shadow of the glorified entrepreneurs.
But i also believe that they recognize the possibility of a fast growth. As you said, the risk is disproportionate, but the promise of a better future(near) motivates them.
Chandrasekaran Jayaraman maybe you need to meet more startup employees and find out what the reality is?
Dr Aniruddha Malpani yes sir. Same applies to you as well. I am in touch with 200 or more startups on daily basis through our WhatsApp groups.
Everyone who contributes with their best foot forward are important and Deserve to be recognized and rewarded if possible.
Great things happen when people work together!
Yes.. I agree. I think people who join startups as employees have a heart of an entrepreneur. They too desire to create something great and long lasting success.
Definitely all people involved at early stage of a company are at high risk. Every person must get the due credits.
A leader would have less value if employees underperform.
This is the way Nature has been designed & working, Probably most successful Enterprenuers aren’t behind keeping the stake for themselves but to have directional control, there are very few alternatives to distribute it effort & skill wise.
Me & my co-founder agreed to employe #GruntFund in our start-up.
We’re looking for smart people to join us & take distributed risk & reward.
Let me know Dr Aniruddha Malpani if better alternatives out there?
We strongly believe & installed that we’re the first family.
I always get shot in the arm when I see my colleagues working so hard & that pushes me one more level up in confidence to making it our vision.
If anyone from programming religion drop me an email on Drayan@alienhu.com, risk & reward assured.
#CEOLesson #ManagementLesson #LifesLesson 1490 by Dr Aniruddha Malpani on #StartUp and its #Employees.??. Sharing.
Employees who work for start ups must do their due diligence properly.
They must believe in the product and service the start up aims to deliver, to begin with…
And also the credentials of the people behind the start up.
That’s the least they should do…..
Because the join the startup for experience tag and the the 10x learning which day will never get in a large corporation in such a short amount of time. Equally slog. Really?! What happened to the skin in the game?
Dr Aniruddha Malpani
In large corporate you have more time to focus on your knowledge. How you utilise your time on bench is your choice.
Dr Aniruddha Malpani Yes they force but at the same time employees feel helpless. An organisation needs the basic structure and you cannot skip any of the part of that structure. most of the startups have ambitions like MNCs but without basic structure.
True
Quite true. Some of them get fired – by the time such companies start giving positive results!
Employes are also part of success but many times not part of success story of that startup. They also take their career risk with uncertainty.
Well said sir…a poignant thought!
I admire Sachin Kumar
Thank you sir
They are called startup enthusiasts not employees
As a practise that we follow in our startup is that we have actually turned them into an entrepreneurs. Apart from salaries we have actually made them shareholders in the company. We have been able to retain 90% of our initial team for last 3 years at the same level of motivation and zeal. The quantum of share is not important but the feeling that the I’m working for my own company has helped us to converge.
Your observation and comment is totally wrong, as most Startups I know, pay at par with market, may be more and also are flexible in terms and conditions when allowing them on leave and holidays, etc.to keep the flock together, as we grow together. In fact in my company, there had never been problems for getting people on board, as my own staff bring in the replacement from worker to engineers a new candidate on their own, when we need someone. I never a HR dept or attempt to get someone. We all do good business, keep our team good and run good. For record, I can say we pay on dot either on 31st itself, or on 1st, all on net banking, on record. Both vendors and staff.
Like investors, who will not fund unless there is sufficient promise of return, even guaranteed return (through next round of financing), capable workers are likely not work in a startup with lower payments unless they are also major stakehoders.
So defensive! Are you alright?
Where would they be sung? In office of course.
Most entrepreneurs would be doing it to their team members.
Praise of entrepreneurs is important from external environment.
Praise of employees is important within the organisation.
One is visible, other is not.
Dr Aniruddha Malpani Agreed. They are real Rockstars not founders. We are hiring for AI, Web roles…
Have been an entrepreneur so can vouch for this that employees who work for startups deserve equal if not more praise than the founders
Oh finally someone is making a valuable point!! Thank you!!
??? Employees are born to work for others, they come to work for startups when don’t find any plush openings 🙂
And then, the heart-wrenching sorry state of struggle begins 🙂
Dr Aniruddha Malpani good observation. Risk is on both sides … for Startups as well as employees…risk comes with rewards
In a capitalistic setup driven purely by demand and supply, what is it that keeps employees taking more risk than they are rewarded for? Every transaction is complete only when both parties feel that they’ve got the best deal.
“disproportionate amounts of risk, as compared to the rewards” is misleading to me.
In our start up employees are treated as family, paid the salary at par with the market rate, paid on time without failure though as co founders we may not be able to take our salaries always…..I am sure this will sound familiar to many other start up co founders. This is how the start up world works. Please get some reality check Dr.
Rajshree Derajshree It all depends on what kind of company it is. I have worked with Few Start Ups and many of them were unable to pay salary on time, we as employees had to remind them about salary date and even then it was not paid on time. And in Few companies I haven’t received salary for 2 or 3 months, they eventually get shut down and we as employees have to forget about that and try hunting for new jobs. what you are saying happens rarely and in reality most of the time many companies get shut down and employees suffer.
Rajshree De good for you. However, the reality is that your startup is not representative of all startups!
Very true
Agree..
Any startup has many challenges. Employing the right resource is one amongst. Its a challenge for them as any resource will be sceptical to join there as they are not aware how the company is and their financial conditions.
They are the ones who give their time to the company but are not sure of their future. It’s the prerogative of the entrepreneurs to take the employees into confidence and ensure that their financial security is ensured.
Dr Aniruddha Malpani agreed… Everyone should be given equal credit.
Though everyone acts as per personal interest ?
Yes. This is much needed. They are equally involved for the success of the startup, but often gets out of the frame. Will think over the initiative to bring this culture.
agree to your statement here sir….i gt a chance to talk to one of the employees of a startup with big praises in media and linkedin, funded and was sad to know that he was not paid on time still he was in full positive vibes not blaming his company…most of the startups this is the actual scenario….
True
Resonates to the age old saying “history remembers kings, not warriors” and yet doesn’t discount their sweat & blood!
In NORMAL models they are getting paid whether on time or delayed. Also have switch/ exit when they desire. Remaining sticking could be situation based.
Dr Aniruddha Malpani we have a team of management students from different profile & universities. All of them are motivated and dedicated as a founding member in our startup. Working for a minimum salary for the first year and rewarded with equity and handsome salary at par industry norms after. Thanks and kudos to our team MEENU MEENAL Yukti Shikha Susmita Gorai Twinkle Kumari Sneha Srivastava Aastha Gupta Elina Singh Shweta Pandey
Thankyou Harish Sir!!
Thank you Sir..
🙂
I do appreciate employees who are willing to work for startups, small brands but i see lot of reluctant candidates who are freshers unemployed and still choosy about roles and responsibilities and company for which they are being interviewed for. Having faith and joing any company to prove ones mettle is what I appreciate more. But we do face lot of manpower crunch because of such mentality.
Always takes a team.
I opening a startup .aviralkmrmn223@gmail.com
Gone are the days when people were called as a cost centre and something that needed to be optimised. Nowadays employees are the social investment and adds value to the “transactive memory” valuation of the company.
Forward thinking and growing companies give the topmost importance to the experience which each employee had with other employees and are working to create good valuation at each employee level.
This is important for all the owners and CEOs to understand. They have to work to align that the employee and the company both are on the same side of the table. #anandmantra
Never thought about it this way but yes it takes incredible courage and trust in someone to put your life on fire and work at a startup.
Specially in a deep tech company where you don’t have capital at the beginning and you’re only “helped” by good employees for your vision and persuasion skills. And I think as an entrepreneur if you’re not grateful and don’t show that to employees it doesn’t end well..
Very well said.
Startups feeling proud of paying salary on time ?
Is this some kind of mercy you are doing ?
It’s your duty guys, nothing to be proud of doing that.
The question is “how an employee undergoes in many Startups”.
